The palm is divided into ten areas called mounts.

In astrology, the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are known as the personal planets. These heavenly bodies, as well as the Sun and Moon, were seen by the ancients to have the greatest effect on human attitudes and behavior because of their proximity to the Earth. Although modern astrology includes the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, and articulates their influence, they are not included here. And, of course, since Earth is the recipient of the planetary influences, it is not included in the naming of the mounts. If we view the hand as a map of the mind, then the hills and valleys of the mounts are its terrain, the living soil of our superconscious. The development of the mounts will directly affect the interpretation of the lines that traverse them. Some mounts may be fertile and evenly formed, others depleted, and still others even treacherous. Some may be too dry, and others too humid. Some may be in a state of transition from one condition to an- other. Others may have stayed as they are for eons. A line that travels across harmonious, balanced mounts will be better nurtured than a line that traverses negatively developed ones. Therefore, an awareness of the underlying mounts is essential for an accurate interpretation of the lines. Like the continents and countries that com- prise the planet Earth, the mounts that together constitute the entire hand must be harmonious with one another. Each comprises a territory with a specific role to play and, when the mounts are in harmony, the whole land feels at ease, and supports the lines that travel across them. The mounts are like a diary of our superconscious convictions about life. Each mount is the focus of a specific aspect of life.
